Summary : In approaching the conflicts which have marked Europe over the last hundred years, each nation has created its own vision of the facts. With the support of the European Commission, the historians at the Memorial de Caen have chosen to look at these conflicts together with their Belgian, British, French, German, Italian and Spanish colleagues.

Since October 2001 these specialists in twentieth century history have been working to reconcile national memories. Together, they gather and comment on sites, country by country, which represent the two world wars and the Spanish Civil War.
From 1 October 2002 a website, accessible to everyone, will show the fruits of the work they have undertaken. By simply clicking on the map of Europe, people will be able to find the history and images of these places of memory, whether known, unknown, or forgotten.
This represents a new step in the promotion of mutual awareness between the countries of the European Union.
